Changes in the punishment for the absence of the letter "Sh"

So, the situations discussed above are normalized a little differently.

"Sh": requirements according to GOST

The following requirements were set:

the sign must be in the form of a triangular with equal sides, each of which is 20 cm;
the letter "Ш" should be in the center of the triangle;
the color palette is as follows: the triangle itself is white, the letter is black, and the border is red;
the thickness of the edging is 0.1 of the length of the side of the triangle, that is, 0.1 of 20 cm or 2 cm.

It is legally allowed to make such a sign yourself and stick it on the car. The advantage is that there were and are many templates on the Internet that could be easily downloaded, printed and pasted.

Where should it be placed

The triangular pointer should be glued on the rear of the car. Most often, rear-view glass is chosen for this, where a sign is installed in one of the corners. If the car is tinted, the letter "Ш" must be placed outside, and not from the passenger compartment. If the sign pasted on the glass interferes with the view, the pointer may be moved to the bumper or other body element.

In any case, driving on studded tires without the “Spikes” sign threatens with a monetary penalty for using a car without identification indicators, defined in paragraph 8 of the “Basic Provisions for the Admission of Vehicles for Operation” (see RF PP dated 10.23.1993 N 1090).

Sign placement

And here was the convenience of the conditions for placing the sign. There was no fixed place for him. Legislatively, it was only said that the element should be placed at the back. Sizes of a sign for self-production

Any driver who has studded their wheels can purchase a badge from an auto shop, but you can also make your own. When making your own, you need to take into account the necessary conditions:

It must be triangular in shape, in the middle with the letter W written in black on a white background.
In order for the sign to be visible at a fairly large distance, its parameters must be 20 cm or more. The sides of the figure are equal to each other.
The red border along the edges of the triangular background is at least 10% of the size of the side length.

There is a special regulation for the manufacture of the sign personally, where the size is specified. It is regulated by traffic rules. A4 cut sheet is ideal for one length of 20 cm.

When the sign "Spikes" was declared mandatory for marking cars on studded tires, the logic of the legislators was that a car with such rubber brakes much sharper. Therefore, the driver following you must be aware of your spikes in order to maintain a sufficiently large distance.

In fact, contrary to this logic, the stopping distance of a car depends primarily on its mass, the presence of electronic security systems and weather conditions. In itself, the presence or absence of spikes on the tire, if it has an impact, is far from paramount.

Perhaps 30 years ago, the “Spikes” sign had some meaning when everyone drove all-weather tires and spikes were quite rare. Then, probably, cars with spikes really slowed down noticeably sharper than all other cars. But nowadays this is no longer the case.

The “Spikes” sign has lost its original meaning, since today more than 70% of motorists drive on studded tires, that is, the vast majority. Therefore, if it is necessary to mark some cars on winter tires in the stream, then it would be more logical to glue the sign on cars with Velcro, and not with spikes.

Why then stick the sign "Spikes" on the car?

The use of studded tires in winter has created not only safer and more comfortable conditions for drivers and passengers of such “re-shod” cars, but also certain problems for other road users, especially those moving behind.

The main danger from studded cars is small gravel, which can fly out from under the studded wheels and damage the car behind, or even injure the driver. And a spike flying out of a tire can also seriously damage the windshield.

By the way, experienced motorists can recall cases when traffic police inspectors concluded that cars colliding in single file on a slippery road were mutually guilty only because the spiked car in front did not have the “Spikes” identification mark. And no appeals to the fact that the rear car did not keep the required distance did not help.

Another thing is that the use of new technologies in the production of car tires made it possible to create models of winter tires that are not only not inferior in braking performance to studded tires, but also surpass them in many situations (studs or Velcro - which is better?). What size should the sign "Spikes" be and where it is better to glue it

Prior to the abolition of the mandatory use of the “Spikes” sign, with the beginning of the winter season in car dealerships, often, the stock of stickers with its image turned out to be insufficient.

In this regard, the independent production of the sign was very relevant and many motorists needed information about the shape, size and color scheme of the sign.

In accordance with the old version of the Rules of the Road, the “Spikes” sign is an equilateral triangle, inside of which the letter “Sh” is located.
The triangle is located with the top up, and the length of the side is at least 20 cm.

By the way, in accordance with the Rules of the Road, motorists are required to use winter tires from December to March. At the same time, it can be both reduced and increased by local legislation, because winter in Norilsk and in Rostov proceeds differently.

Often, motorists wonder if the reverse situation is a violation: the “Spikes” sign installed on the car in the summer (more precisely, installed in the winter and not removed in the summer). The Rules do not say anything about installing a sign in a strictly defined period, and, therefore, such a situation is not a violation, and there is no need to fear a fine.
