Various rites and prayers for the departed, contained in church liturgical books ah, constitute the great wealth of the Church. However, for many modern Christians, this church treasury remains largely closed, since liturgical books are inaccessible and difficult to use. At the same time, various non-canonical texts of prayers for the dead have now spread, as a rule, taken from Uniate prayer books or newly composed ones.

Saint Athanasius (Sakharov, †1962), an outstanding connoisseur of the Church Charter and a confessor of the faith of a bygone age, in his book On the Commemoration of the Dead According to the Charter Orthodox Church” indicates the need for obedience to the Church in all spiritual deeds, especially in prayer. Prayer not according to the order of the church, he says, is like that “strange fire” that Nadab and Abihu, the unworthy sons of the priest Aaron, brought to God. Acting arbitrarily, we can take the most dangerous and disastrous path of pride and, instead of benefit, cause harm to ourselves and others. This applies not only to temple, public worship, but also to home prayer. Church ranks and rites, in particular, the rules for commemorating the dead, were composed from the prayerful experience of the saints, under the guidance of the Spirit of God, and Christians accepted them with humility and love - not as an unbearable yoke, but as good and light, received from a beloved and loving Mother - and, following them, they were saved. Similarly, all those who wish to follow the path of salvation must be obedient children of the Church and try to assimilate the structure of her life and the prayerful experience of the fathers, without inventing anything of their own and without taking into use anything alien.

This collection, together with the book Psalter and Canons for the Dead, to which it is a supplement, aims to make the statutory funeral services available to a wide number of parishioners and to make it easier for them to pray for the dead in accordance with the rules of the Orthodox Church. It includes the canons about the departed, contained in the liturgical books - the Oktoechos and the Followed Psalter. The canons are set out for reading by the laity in home prayer.

The canons for the dead are included in most funeral services; they are very diverse in content and mood, depending on the destination.

Canons of the Departed 8 Tones are placed in the Sabbath service of the Octoechos as the second canons at Matins. According to the Charter, they are supposed to be sung on Friday evening. The same canons can be included in the funeral service, they can also be read in a home prayer for the departed.

The canons about the departed Octoechos were written by the Monk Theophanes the Confessor, the Inscribed, Bishop of Nicaea. His name is indicated in the acrostic canon of the 5th tone (and in the Slavic Oktoech he is also indicated separately in the 3rd, 6th and 7th tones), however, other canons about the deceased Oktoech undoubtedly belong to the Monk Theophanes. The canons are placed in numerical order, which is indicated in acrostics: “By faith I offer the first song to the dead”, “To the dead I weave the second song”, etc. All of them are inextricably linked and form a single whole.

The Monk Theophan the Confessor was born in Jerusalem in Christian family. Together with his older brother Theodore, he studied at the Lavra of St. Sava, where both brothers accepted monasticism and the rank of presbyter. The brothers Theodore and Theophan became famous as champions of icon veneration. On behalf of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, they went to Constantinople to denounce the iconoclast emperor Leo the Armenian (813-820) and defend Orthodoxy; later they denounced the iconoclast emperors Michael Balba (820-829) and Theophilus (829-842), for which they had to endure imprisonment, hunger, and severe torment. Emperor Theophilus ordered that insulting verses be written on their faces with red-hot needles, in which the holy confessors were spoken of as "vessels of superstitious delusion." Hence the name adopted by both brothers - "Inscribed". Reverend Theodore died in the dungeon. Theophanes, his brother in flesh and in spirit, laid the body in a coffin, singing funeral hymns over it - perhaps it was precisely those funeral canons that were later included in the Octoechos. The Monk Theophan lived to see the end of the iconoclastic persecution of Orthodoxy. His confessional feat lasted 25 years - from 817 to 842. Upon his return from exile, he was ordained bishop of Nicaea by the holy Patriarch Methodius († 847). Simeon Logothete, reporting this, says: “When there were those who were dissatisfied with this, pointing out that he was a Sirian and Orthodox, whether there was no one to vouch for, Saint Methodius answered, pointing not to his forehead: there is no need to wish for a better testimony after this inscription. Shortly thereafter, around the year 850, Saint Theophanes died. The Church commemorates him on October 11 (24).

The Monk Theophan was the author of many works, including those in defense of icon veneration; he also wrote many church hymns - he owns about 150 canons in Oktoikh, Menaia and Triodion. In the Greek Menaion we read the following words in his honor: “Like a shining light, you illuminate the entire sunflower with the light of your dogmas; like David, striking the zither, you sing worthy songs to the saints of Christ and you announce Epirus (the region where the Monk Theophanes was bishop) all. That is why you are glorified with dignity, priest Theophanes. The canons about the dead belong to the best creations of the Monk Theophan; their high dignity is noted by many researchers of church hymnography.

The troparia of the canons are arranged in the following order: the first troparion contains a prayer to the holy martyrs; we encourage them to intercede before God for our dead, especially strong, since they endured countless torments, shed their blood for the Lord and did not spare their lives for His sake. In addition, the appeal to the martyrs in the canons about the dead, which is generally frequent in funeral services, reminds us that these hymns go back to the funerary singing of the first Christians near the remains of the holy martyrs for Christ. The refrain before the first troparion "Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel" corresponds to the content of these troparions.

Then follow two troparia containing our petitions for the dead. In them, we present before the Lord Jesus Christ everything that can only incline Him to mercy, point to the Divine Wisdom, by which we were created in the beginning, commemorate His Divine exhaustion, His suffering, death and resurrection, which renewed the fallen human race. Destroying death and hell, He gave us immortality, delivered us from death and corruption. The Lord knows the infirmity of our nature, and He is inexpressibly merciful, “the ever-flowing Source of goodness”, “all sweetness, all desire and insatiable love, all kindness inexpressible.” He is the Lord of all, having power over the living and the dead. There are many mansions in His Kingdom, and He "divides them to all according to their property, according to the measure of virtue." We do not dare to say anything before God about the eternal fate of the souls of the departed, we only humbly remind that they are His servants and, “having been cleansed from the ancient ancestral fall by baptism and again by generation and having a rod of power - His Cross, they passed the worldly sea” (canons 4- th and 8th tones). In the last troparia of each song of the canons, we turn our prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos and ask Her intercession for us and our departed ones.

In the saddle after the 3rd ode and in the kontakion after the 6th ode, we pray to the merciful Master and the Lord to forgive the sins of the departed and to rest them together with the saints, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, to lead them into endless life. Ikos gives us an example of the Christian attitude towards death: the natural sorrow for a person in the face of death is dissolved in him by humble obedience to the will of the Creator and praise to the immortal God: we are slaves of the Creator who created us, we obey Him, and do not resist. “For what was created, although from the earth, but not intended for the earth,” explains Bishop Athanasius (Sakharov), “returning to the earth, as not corresponding to its intended purpose, naturally causes grave sobbing. But for a Christian, this weeping is not like the tomb weeping of those who have no hope (see 1 Thess. 4:13). For those who have hope, the grave weeping about returning to the earth is dissolved by the thought that this is done according to God's command. And what is commanded by God, then everything is good. Therefore, a Christian even weeps and praises the Lord, his tomb weeping is intertwined with the angelic praise of God: “alleluia”, which in itself can never be a sob, but always, even in funeral rites, remains angelic praise.

The Followed Psalter contains a special canon about a single deceased. The use of this canon along with the canons about the deceased in 8 tones is convenient because the mention of the deceased in it is in the singular, while in the canons about the deceased it is in the plural, and therefore there is no need to adapt the text to the commemoration of one or many. For ease of reading, we give this canon separately for the deceased (male) and the deceased (female).

The canon about the one deceased is sung in the 8th voice; it begins with a prayer for those who pray themselves - with a request to give us a word for fervent prayer. There are no appeals to the martyrs in it, and in the third troparion (on "Glory") of each song, except for the last one, petitions for the deceased (and for ourselves) are addressed to the Holy Trinity. With boldness and hope, we ask the Lord for mercy on our deceased, with whom, perhaps, quite recently, “we have fallen many times together, and in the house of God together with a crotch”, and he prays with us: “I transgressed the commandment that You gave me, and became mortal, but You, Christ God, descended into the tomb and resurrected the souls of the dead from the age of death, do not raise me to torment, but to rest.

In the Old Russian "Psalms" before the canon about the only deceased there is the following preface on behalf of the deceased, addressed to his spiritual father. It can also be addressed to all who could pray for it.

Preface to the Canon of the Deceased

My spiritual father and lord, name, create for me, for God's sake, the last love and such mercy: sing this canon for me for thirds (third day), for nines (ninth day), forty days (fortieth day). If you are unable to do this, then sing it at least on one of these days or on some other day, only before the fortieth day (until the fortieth day). If, moreover, you deign to sing it, then you will bring me still greater benefit and you yourself will receive a greater reward from God, who said: “Measure to the finest measure, it will be measured to you” (Matt. 7, 2). And you, Father, for the sake of God, show mercy to my sinful soul, pray for it to the Lord, and the Lord our God will measure you for this, and have mercy on you, as if you were merciful, for He Himself said: “Blessed are the mercies, for they will have mercy” (Matthew 5:7). And alms for me is if someone prays for my soul and asks for mercy from God, and forgiveness of sins, and eternal rest. But enough already I ask for mercy, I will also speak about spiritual love, which I mentioned at the beginning. "There is a fulfillment of the law any way" (Rom. 13:10). “No one has greater love than this,” says the Lord, “but whoever lays down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). But I do not ask you, father, to lay down your life for my soul; but pray diligently for me to God, or bow down as much as you please. Thus, you will fulfill the commandment of the Savior about love, and in this way you will greatly help me. Do not think only that my body is already dead, but rather think about how hard, and bitter, and painful, and death is filled with sadness and longing for a person, especially for a sinner. Remember the insulting denunciations from demons when the soul is separated from the body, and the torture of every word and thought, voluntary or involuntary. Think also about the time when the holy angels will lead the soul through the air to the ordeals of the fierce world-keeper; what fears and threats there are for souls, as many saints write about. when they bring the soul to worship the throne of the Glory of the Lord, and the Lord will command to show that soul the dwellings of the saints - a righteous soul for consolation, and a sinner for great sorrow - for he will see with his own eyes what blessings she has lost. Then the Lord will command to bring the soul to dark dungeons, to the underworld of hell and show it terrible torments, indescribable by word and inconceivable by the mind - for only by faith we believe that such torments exist. And now, in everything that was written before, my soul is in misery. Therefore, knowing for sure that all this must be, I first wrote this petition with my own hand. Do me mercy, God-loving lord, for God's sake, share these sorrows with me. As we once ate and drank and rejoiced together many times, so now suffer with me. For the Apostle also teaches us to "rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep" (Rom. 12:15). Therefore, mourn with me, having done as I ask you, so that you will help me get rid of eternal sorrows. For I hope that, seeing your love and that you did not despise my prayer, God will not despise your prayer, and at your request will give you everything useful for your salvation, and have mercy on me. If He also allowed the legion of demons to enter the herd of swine at the request, will he not hear the prayer of His servant and will he not fulfill His promise? For He said: “Everything, if you ask in a believing prayer, you will receive ... Heaven and earth will pass by, but My words will not pass by” (Matt. 21, 22; 24, 35). Be healthy in Christ and be saved by the prayers of all the saints. Amen.

Prayer for the dead (as well as for the living) is the duty of everyone Orthodox Christian, for they also pray for him, and thus he becomes the debtor of everyone - both the living and the dead. Prayer is at the same time an expression of Christian love, the need for love for one's fellow believers. After all, “we are all one body, both in heaven and on earth, all are partakers of the Life-giving God-human Body – the Church and the Church; the same life of the Church both on earth and in heaven, for there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one communion, one virtue, one grace.

Church hymns about the departed tell us that all believers do not die, but live forever in the Lord, that the Lord only resettles His servants to another life, for, according to the word of Christ, “God ... is not god of the dead but alive, for with Him all are alive” (Luke 20:38). They testify to the closeness to us of those who died in Christ, to the unity of the Church of heaven and earth. And prayer is the main force of this unity.

There are many testimonies that the prayers of the Church bring undoubted benefits to the departed. Great blessing also happens to those who take upon themselves the work of prayer in their memory. “Offerings for the dead are not in vain,” says St. John Chrysostom, “not in vain are prayers, not in vain are alms: all this was established by the Holy Spirit, desiring that we receive benefit through each other.”

Funeral hymns remind the living of the common fate of all the inhabitants of the earth. They speak of the original purpose of man, created in the image of the Trinitarian God and placed by the Creator "in the midst of humility and majesty"; his body was created from the earth and “inspired by divine inspiration”, the spirit of life (see Gen. 1, 26; 2, 7). It was intended not for death and corruption, but for living in paradise, for participating in eternity, in Divine life. They also speak of the fact that a person did not retain this Divine dignity, transgressed the commandment and was cast out of paradise and condemned to return again to the earth from which he was taken. Is there more grief in the world than that experienced by a person at the sight of death? The sadness of the bitter separation from our loved ones is combined with the grief that we, sinners, are faced with the same path of the whole earth. Steadily marching along it, we will someday - perhaps soon - reach "the same abode (tomb)". Will our loved ones then, with good hope, be able to ask God for mercy for us, praying with the words of church rites, evoking our virtues, saying that we “put our hope in Christ”, “served Him with all our heart”, “carried His yoke and burden His lung on its frame"? The Holy Fathers teach that such thoughts and feelings are very beneficial for the living, for they instill in their souls “the saving fear of death, to which holiness is delivered.”

The hymns of the funeral canons turn the mournful gaze of those praying to Christ the Savior, revealing the most important dogmatic truths of Christianity. The Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Son of God and the perfect God, “without leaving the bowels of the Father”, came to earth in order to save the erring human race, deceived by the devil, in order to “renew more beautifully” man who had fallen to the earth; “Helper by nature,” He destroyed Himself, taking the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:7), voluntarily took upon Himself the consequences of our sin, knew all our weaknesses, all the limitations of our existence, except for the sinful passions that depend on our freedom. The only Sinless One, not participating in any sin, He took upon Himself the sins of the world, paid for all with Himself, redeemed the world with His Blood, Healed our infirmities with His wounds; renewed human nature buried by passions. “Treasure of immortality”, hypostatic Life and Source of life, having power over life and death, accepted death for the salvation of all, was in the tomb, dead in the flesh, numbered among the dead - and by His death abolished the law of death, crushed its gates, dulled its sting, mortified her strength; With his “life-giving deadness he killed the slayer” (the devil), delivered “those who fell into the dust of death”, exuded immortal life. Having descended into hell, by the lordship of His Divinity he dispelled its darkness, abolished its gloomy kingdom and resurrected its prisoners. The God-man Jesus Christ has the power to forgive sins and can give the departed an eternal inheritance, the Kingdom of Heaven; but we must beg forgiveness of sins, and salvation, and every gift that the Lord brings, to us and our loved ones, the living and the dead; this expresses our real participation in the Church, the living body of Christ, our participation in the divine-human economy of salvation.

Participating in church services, Christians repeatedly during their lives, from day to day, from year to year, especially in the days Holy Week, mysteriously experience all these saving deeds of God for us. On bright Easter days, rejoicing and rejoicing in the Risen Christ, the Church again and again reminds the faithful that the Lord Jesus Christ has resurrected us “from the dead to a living hope” (1 Pet. 1:3), to a hope that overcomes death, which enters into immortality. He opened the way to His eternal Kingdom for us, “revealed the entrances of the belly”, kindled our hearts with the thirst for infinite life. And while the time has not yet ended for us, while the Lord shows us the wondrous miracle of His patience and mercy, it depends only on ourselves to take this path and be established on it with the help of the grace of Christ, in the Holy Spirit.

The grace-filled remembrance that death has indeed been conquered throughout the universe and that human nature is destined for eternal life with the Lord in “eternal joy,” transforms our tragedy and sorrow in the face of death into prayerful sorrow and joy, the sorrow of temporary separation, the joy of eternal life.

The canons about the departed (both about one and about many) can be read in home prayer of choice and desire at any time, except for the Twelfth and Great Feasts, as well as the days of Passion and Bright Weeks.

For many of the departed, one of the canons about the departed 8 tones is read, preferably the canon of the current voice (that is, the voice to which Oktoeh chants are sung that week). This canon can be read for all your relatives and loved ones on the eve of Saturday.

There is the following ancient church tradition about the benefits of commemorating the dead on the eve of Saturday. Saint Macarius of Egypt († 390) once, walking through the desert, found the skull of some dead man lying on the ground. The old man asked who he was? And the skull replied that he was the chief priest of idols among the pagans who lived in this place and, calling Saint Macarius by name and spirit-bearer, told him that when Christians pray on Saturday for Christians who had departed, then “there is light on them from Friday evening to Monday dawn. "Then we (the souls of the infidels)," he concluded his story, "have some consolation."

Psalm 50

And read the canon.

The beginning of the canon, common to all funeral canons

Canon, voice 1

its edge:

“By faith I offer the first song to the departed”

Canto 1

Irmos: Your victorious right hand glorified divinely in the fortress: that one, Immortal, as if almighty, opposing to erase, the Israelites have made a new path of depth.

Chorus: Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel (bow).

The gates of death and faith, Thou hast crushed with Your death, Immortal, open the gates of the Lord, more than mind, immortality to the departed, by the prayers of Your passion-bearer.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants (bow).

Yes, let us be honored with the Divine belly, thou hast descended to death, the same has overthrown the treasures, thou hast taken us from there: now, Life-giver, the reposed rest.

Glory: You perceive my perishable and deadly things, clothed you in incorruption, and lifted you up to infinite life and blissfulness, even if you were generous, you accepted them, rest in peace.

And now: Having given birth to the Word of God from God, faithfully, let us sing: That, O All-Pure, the path of life to the dead was, Yuzhe, as the God-Receiver and the Mother of God we will glorify.

Canto 3

Irmos: One, knowing the weakness of a human being and mercifully not imagining it, gird me with strength from on high, to cry out to You, Holy One, animated by the temple of Your inexpressible glory, Lover of mankind.

As if one is good, as if one is many-merciful, even piously departed to You, rest in heavenly villages, where unspeakable joy and pleasure, and where the martyr's cathedral rejoices.

You alone appeared on earth, my Savior, sinless, even take away the sins of the world as merciful; From this world, rest the souls of those who have passed away by faith in the courts of Your saints, in the sweetness of paradise, Lover of mankind.

Glory: Depose the power of death, exude an endless belly to all the faithful, Master: in this, do the pious departed, despising the immeasurable sins and forgiving their sins, Lover of mankind.

And now: Conceived without a seed, the Pure, the ever-present Word, who came to us in the flesh, and destroyed the fortress of death, and the resurrection to the dead and eternal life with His mercy bestowing.

Lord have mercy ( thrice).

Sedalen, tone 6

Glory and now, the Theotokos:

Canto 4

Irmos: Mount Thee, by the grace of God, shaded, the clairvoyant Habakkuk, having seen the eyes, from Thee come out of Israel proclaiming to the Holy One for our salvation and renewal.

Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.

Having killed hell by Your invincible power, thou wast imputed to the dead, the only freedom, Christ, the souls of the freedom of the pious, and hedgehog condemnation in it, the holy martyr with prayers.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

Whoever is like the Lord of all, who is unworthy of Your slaughter from Adam, gave us the price; the same we pray to Your bounty, having reposed in peace, giving forgiveness of sins.

Glory: Thou hast accepted, O my Savior, even in the tomb of the position and even in the tombs of life the condemned dead, as God, resurrected thou. Now, vouchsafe the eternal life to the reposed, as the one Lover of mankind.

And now: Having saved the human race by Thy Nativity, Thou hast given birth to us a hypostatic Belly, consumption of death and making a rise to life, the Most Immaculate Mother of God, the Lady.

Canto 5

Irmos: Enlightening with the radiance of Thy coming, O Christ, and illuminating the ends of the world with Thy Cross, enlighten the hearts with the light of Thy God-consciousness of those who sing Orthodox Thee.

Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.

Heal the mortal from hell, death is pleasant and death has blunted the sting; but Thyself give rest, Thou didst receive them, Life-giver, martyr with prayers.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

Mortification and decay, free people, make the souls of the faithfully reposed in the courts of Thy saints, from now all sorrow will flee, and joy will be settled.

Glory: Paradise, ubo with you, to the hanged man, as if you opened it; now accept, O Lord, souls who have passed away to Thee by faith, giving them the first-born to be settled in the Church.

And now: Delivering on Thee the hopes of those in power, quietly guide to the haven of the Divine will, with Thy motherly boldness to Thy Son, Blessed All-Immaculate.

Canto 6

Irmos: Bypass us the last abyss, do not deliver, we will change, like sheep of the slaughter, save Thy people, our God, Thou art the strength of the weak and correction.

Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.

As if merciful, grant forgiveness of sins to the reposed, and giving eternal pleasure, where Your grace shines on Your face, and Your passion-bearers illuminate.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

Even with the blood that has flowed from Your ribs, thou hast redeemed the world, by the faith of the deceased, O Christ, deliver with thy honest Passion, thou hast given thyself a price for all.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

Even the hand that created me is the most pure first and the bestowing spirit, and, having fallen to the earth, evil, again renewing the most beautiful, now the souls of the deceased, rest Himself.

Glory: Lord, inspire Thy luminous chamber, even in faith to Thee who have fallen asleep, despising those sins, as if they are good and merciful and many-merciful.

And now: We sing to Thee, Blessed Pure One, For the sake of us, the ascension, existing in darkness and the shadow of death, the truth, the unsetting Sun, You were the intercessor of our salvation.

Lord have mercy ( thrice). Glory now.

Kontakion, tone 8

Canto 7

Irmos: You are a smart, Mother of God, oven, we consider, faithful, as if the youths saved the three Exalted, renew the world, in Your womb is entirely, God praised by the fathers and glorified.

Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.

The radiance of Your most pure glory is illuminated, Christ, give, from the storm of the world to you who have departed, and make them worthy of the martyrs to cry out to You: God of the Fathers, praised, blessed be Thou.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

New Adam was truly new, Adam's Sodetel, Even the oath of Adam's one consumed thou. The same we pray to Thee: rest in the sweetness of paradise, Christ, as the one who is merciful.

Glory: Even our natural infirmity is only known, like God, good and merciful, all of them, you have reposed them, even if the light that does not go down visits your face, teach, Christ, praised by the fathers God and glorified.

Even rich mercy ever exuding, piously ever receiving Thee, in Thy house, Christ, in Thy marvelous tabernacle, give a place of weakening, Master, Thy servant, as if merciful.

Glory: You were the strongest for death, O Christ: having bound that, you delivered us, and now deliver us from the sowing of corruption of the deceased, as Good, and grant the communion of Your radiance.

And now: Establishing my wavering mind, Mother of God, strengthen with Divine commands, Who was born from Your consecrated womb and abolished, Mistress, the hellish gloomy kingdom.

Canto 2

Irmos: Having established me on the rock of faith, Thou hast widened my mouth against my enemies, rejoiced my spirit, when I sing: there is nothing holy, like our God, and there is no righteousness, more than You, Lord

Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.

Your beauty shines with a radiance in the faith of the departed, favor with Your martyrs, Who is rich in mercy, Thou art our God, and there is no more righteous than You, Lord.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

In the place of cooling, in the bowels of Abraham, Thy chosen one, make Thy servants, as if generous, cry out to Thee: Thou art our God, and there is no more righteous than Thee, Lord.

Glory: Settle in the devils of heaven with the wise virgins who have descended, Lord, accept Thy servants of the priesthood, whom Thou hast abandoned by Thy will from the temporal, O One Lover of Man.

And now: I was mortified and returned to the earth, you raised me up, giving birth to the Life-giver, and you raised me from the hell of the underworld, the Mother of God, glorifying Thee by faith, and honoring, Most Pure, Thee, all-singing.

Lord have mercy ( thrice).

Sedalen, tone 6

Truly, all vanity, life is shadow and sleep, for every earthly being is tormented in vain, as the Scripture says: when we gain peace, then we will dwell in the grave, where the king and the poor are together. The same, Christ God, give rest to those who have passed away, as a philanthropist.

Glory and now, the Theotokos: All-Holy Mother of God, do not leave me during my life, do not entrust me to human intercession, but intercede yourself and have mercy on me.

Canto 4

Irmos: I sing to Thee, with hearing, O Lord, I heard and was horrified: for you go to me, looking for me, the erring one. That much is Your condescension, a hedgehog on me, I glorify, Many-merciful.

Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.

Who lived with hope and love, and with an Orthodox mind, even more than the mind of Thy glory, vouchsafe Thy servants, Christ, with Thy many philanthropy and chosen martyrs with prayers.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

Like an ever-flowing stream of sweetness, ever solder the elect, Lord: with them and now reposed, Christ, to Thee, feed Thy unspeakable mercy at the waters of abandonment.

Glory: You rule over the living, Lord, and rule over the dead. You resurrect the dust that exists in the earth with Your power. The same to you who came to you in your courts, Savior, settled.

And now: Thou hast healed Evino's contrition, and the ancient wretchedness, Thou hast given birth to the Creator, who is able to correct us, the sins of the fallen, Mother of God is one Mother of God.

Canto 5

Irmos: Giver of light and Creator of the ages, Lord, in the light of Thy commandments, instruct us: unless we know no other god for Thee.

Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.

Mortified us, and laid in aphids, you raised from the gloomy hellish treasures, and delighted you, Blessed, and combining the holy angels with an army.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

For a hedgehog to save us, as thou camet, O Christ, accept now, even piously to Thee, reposed, as one good, on the bosom of Abraham, and with Lazarus they settled.

Glory: Thou hast permitted, O Lord, my flying and long warfare, I first intercede for you and have been a prayer book of reconciliation; and now your servants, generous, rest.

And now: Under Thy shelter, Mother of God, those who hope in Thee are saved: Thou hast given birth to a life-giver to us, life-giving with all will.

Canto 6

Irmos: Lying in the sinful abyss, I call upon the abyss unsearchable of Your mercy: from aphids, O God, raise me up.

Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.

Unspeakable and Divine lordship, even martyrdom of the face, vouchsafe even from the earth reposed thou art, all-powerful by Your will, Humane.

Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.

Even having created, Life-giver Christ, a man from the earth, they have left them from us, give rest, leaving them to the evil ones, as if merciful and philanthropist.

Glory: Be illumined by the goodness of Thy glory, who left life, and to Thy inexpressible light, Lord, who has gone to rest.

And now: Delivering diligently appear calling on Thee, Most Holy Lady, who even gave birth to God, possessing life and death.

Lord have mercy ( thrice). Glory now.

Kontakion, tone 8

Ikos

You alone are the Immortal, who created and created man; on earth, we will be created from the earth and we will go to the earth there, as if thou hadt commanded me, who created me and the river mi: as the earth thou art, and depart into the earth, or else all men will go, a tomb sob creating a song: alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Psalm 90

Alive in the help of the Most High, in the blood of the God of heaven will be settled. The Lord says: Thou art my intercessor and my refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. Yako He will deliver you from the net of the hunter, and from the rebellious word, His splash will overshadow you, and under His wings you hope, His truth will be your weapon. Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, from the arrow flying in the days, from the thing in the darkness of the transient, from the scum and the demon of the noonday. A thousand will fall from your country, and the darkness at your right hand will not come close to you, both look at your eyes and see the retribution of sinners. As You, O Lord, are my hope; The Most High has made you your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not approach your body, as if by His Angel a commandment about you, save you in all your ways. They will take you in their hands, but not when you stumble your foot on a stone; step on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover, and, as I know My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him, I am with him in sorrow, I will crush him and glorify him, I will fulfill him with long life and show him My salvation.

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and my sin before me is taken out. I have sinned against you alone and done evil before you, as if you were justified in your words and won, when you judge Thee. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins give birth to me, my mother. Behold, thou hast loved the truth, Thy obscure and secret wisdom revealed to me. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Give joy and gladness to my ears, the bones of the humble will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities. Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Reward me the joy of Your salvation and confirm me with the dominating Spirit. I will teach the wicked in Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from the blood, O God, God of my salvation, my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. As if you would have desired sacrifices, you would have given them, you would not favor burnt offerings. Sacrifice to God, the spirit is broken, the heart is contrite and humble, God will not despise. Please, O Lord, with Thy favor Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, an offering and a burnt offering, then they will offer calves on Your altar.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God thrice).

Lord have mercy ( thrice)

Troparion, tone 8

With the depth of wisdom, humanely build everything and give it useful to everyone, the One Creator, rest, O Lord, the soul of Your servant, put hope in Thee, the Creator and Builder and our God.

Glory, and now: Theotokos: You and the wall, and the haven of the Imam, and the prayer book are favorable to God, He gave birth to Thou, Brideless Mother of God, the faithful salvation.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy and rest on the soul of Your servant, name, in endless ages, like a good man and a philanthropist, amen,

And we read the troparion three times with bows:

Bringing alien fire before the Lord, as self-made, as a violation of the established rite of worship, was such a serious crime that the guilty, as a warning to others, were immediately punished with death. See Leviticus 10, 1-2; Number 3, 4; 26, 61.

In prayers and church hymns, writes the saint righteous John Kronstadt († 1908), - throughout their space, the Spirit of truth moves ... Prayers and chants are the breath of the Holy Spirit ”(John of Kronstadt, righteous. So that prayer is not a sin. St. Petersburg, 2002, p. 83-84) .

“All liturgical books,” continues the same thought, the outstanding Serbian theologian of the twentieth century, Rev. These are dogmas expressed in the words of prayer, and through prayer they are transformed into the soul of our soul, into the life of our faith. This is Orthodox pedagogy - a stream of living, undying, apostolic life Holy Tradition"(Justin (Popovich), reverend. On the Divine-human path. St. Petersburg, 199, p. 140-141.

See Athanasius (Sakharov), Bishop. On the commemoration of the dead according to the charter of the Orthodox Church. SPb., 1995, p. 17, 19-21.

It is also true that ascetics who have reached high levels of spiritual life and have taken upon themselves the feat of silence no longer need the usual order of church services, since their mind is incessantly in prayer. ““Asses and songs are church traditions,” writes St. Barsanuphius the Great, “and they are well established for the agreement of all people (in prayers), also in hostels for the agreement of many. needlework, reading and meditation, and, after a few hours, they begin to pray ”(St. Barsanuphius the Great and John, a guide to spiritual life in the answers and questions of students. (St. Petersburg, 1905, answer 74). However, this does not mean that they violate the Charter Church, On the contrary, having fulfilled it (not only in letter, but also in spirit), they achieve freedom in Christ.

It is especially important to remember the words about obedience to the Church in our evil time, the time of all-pervading lies, which require firm standing in the purity of faith, unswerving adherence to the church institutions received from the holy fathers. After all, time is inexorable and our life is rapidly approaching the end, and if we deviate from the right path, we may not have time to correct.

The book was published by our publishing house in 1999.

Oktoih (Greek - octoglasnik) - a book containing the services of the days of the week of eight voices. The Church Rule of the Week names in total all seven days of the week; the week is the first day of the week, Sunday. Among the days of the week, the Church mainly devotes Saturday to the commemoration of the dead (as well as to the remembrance of all the saints who have pleased God from the beginning).

At a great memorial service after Vespers, or, if a memorial service cannot be performed, at Compline.

Canons of Oktoech

Canons about the deceased

Commemoration of the unbaptized and the unrepentant

Prayer at the separation of the soul from the body and for the newly deceased

About the sin of killing children in the womb

Reading of the funeral canons at the commemoration of the dead

It also takes care of the salvation of the souls of the departed, praying for them to the Lord God, that He forgives them sins, voluntary and involuntary, is the sacred duty of every believer in Christ. For the dead, the Psalter, canons, requiems are usually read, in the modern tradition of the Orthodox Church, akathists are also read.

This Section Orthodox prayer book includes the texts of the canons about the departed, taken from the Octoechos and the Followed Psalter and adapted for reading in home prayer.

The canons for the dead are included in most funeral services; they are very diverse in content and mood, depending on the destination.

The canons of the departed in 8 tones are placed in the Sabbath service of the Octoechos (one of the main liturgical books) as the second canons at Matins. According to the Charter, they are supposed to be sung on Friday evening (because the liturgical circle - the day begins in the evening).

Venerable Theophan the Inscribed, Bishop of Nicaea, Confessor

The Monk Theophan the Confessor was born in Jerusalem into a Christian family. Saint Theodore died in prison.

In the Old Russian Psalms, before the canon about the only deceased, there is the following preface on behalf of the deceased, addressed to his spiritual father. It can be addressed to all who could pray for it.

How to read the canons about the dead

The canons about the departed (both about one and about many) can be read in home prayer of choice and desire at any time, except for the Twelfth and Great Feasts, as well as the days of Passion and Bright Weeks.

For many of the departed, one of the canons about the departed 8 tones is read, preferably the canon of the current voice (that is, the voice to which Oktoeh chants are sung that week). This canon can be read for all your relatives and loved ones on the eve of Saturday.

Saint Paisios the Great was born in Egypt. From childhood, he fell in love with the monastic life. Having renounced his will, he lived under the spiritual guidance of Saint Pavma, fulfilling his orders in everything. The holy ascetic diligently read spiritual books and became especially famous for the feat of fasting and prayer. The main precept of the Monk Paisios was one: to do nothing according to one's own will, but in everything to fulfill the will of one's mentors. Burdened by the breaking of the silence, the monk withdrew to a more distant cave. Once he was raptured to heavenly abodes and was rewarded there to partake of the immaterial Divine food. The Monk Paisios was distinguished by great humility, performed the feats of fasting and prayer, but, if possible, hid them from strangers. To the question of the monks, which virtue is the highest of all, the monk answered: “The one that is performed in secret and about which no one knows.” Saint Paisios has the grace of God to deliver from eternal torment those who have died without repentance. Memory Saint Paisios Great on June 19 (July 2 in civil style). The canon is taken from an old canon, and Bishop Athanasius (Sakharov), an authoritative expert on the statutory worship, refers to it as sung for deliverance from the torment without repentance of the dead in his book “On the Commemoration of the Dead According to the Rule of the Orthodox Church”.

The generous Lord appeared to you and said: Oh, My servant, it is good to be like My love, care for sinners, deign to accept torment for their deliverance.

Yako He will deliver you from the net of the hunter, and from the rebellious word, His splash will overshadow you, and under His wings you hope, His truth will be your weapon.

Irmos: I will pour out a prayer to the Lord, and to Him I will proclaim my sorrows, for my soul is angry, and my belly draw near to hell, and I pray, like Jonah: from aphids, God, raise me up.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of your departed servant.

He overthrew Hell, Master, resurrected thou who died from eternity: and now departed from us, in the bosom of Abraham You, O God, have instilled, releasing all sins, like Mercy.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of your departed servant.

The commandment, Thou hast given me, O God, transgressed and mortal, but You, O God, descended into the tomb and resurrected souls from time immemorial, do not raise me, Master, to torment, but to rest, reposed, cries out to You with us, Many-merciful.

Glory: We pray to Thee, without beginning Father and Son and Holy Soul, embittered by the malice of the soul-evil world, and to Thee, the Creator, do not reject the soul that has passed into the bottom of hell, O God, my Savior.

And now: From heaven, Christ our God, like rain on a fleece, Most Pure, descend on Thee, soldering the whole world and drying up all godless streams, flooding the whole earth with His mind, Ever-Virgin; Pray that you give rest to your reposed servant, name.

Lord have mercy (Three times). Glory And now:

Kontakion, tone 8

With the saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul of Your servant, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life.

Ikos

You alone are the Immortal, who created and created man; on the earth, we will be created from the earth and go to the earth there, as if you commanded, Who created me and my river: as if you were the earth and you will go to the earth, or else all the people will go, the tomb weeping creates a song: alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Canto 7

Irmos: The youths came from Judea, in Babylon sometimes, by the faith of the Trinity, the fire of the cave was prayed, singing: God of the fathers, blessed be Thou.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of your departed servant.

Lord Christ God, whenever you want to judge the world, spare the soul of your servant, whom you received from us, crying out: our fathers, God, blessed be you.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of your departed servant.

In the food of Paradise, where the righteous souls rejoice, who have served You, count with them, Christ, the soul of Your servant, who sang: Our fathers, God, blessed be Thou.

Glory: The three Jewish youths saved into the fires, sung in the Face of Triech, deliver the fire of the eternally deceased, who sang Ty true: our father, God, blessed be Thou.

And now: The lord of Christ, who gave birth to all God, deliver the power of the dark air prince, Virgin, who reposed in faith and sang: our fathers, God, blessed be Thou.

Canto 8

Irmos: The sevenfold cave of the Chaldean tormentor is fiercely kindled by the pious, but having seen this with the best power, crying out to the Creator and Redeemer: fathers, bless the priests, sing the priests, exalt the people forever.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of your departed servant.

Having finished the flow and resorted to You, Lord, the reposed is now crying out, forgive sins, Christ God, and do not judge me, when you want to judge everyone, I cry out to You faithfully: all the works of the Lord, praise the Lord and exalt Him forever.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of your departed servant.

He who has carried, O Lord, Thy yoke on his frame, and Thy burden is light, if not always, both in the place of Thy saints, instill his soul, who has sung to Thee, Christ the Savior: fathers bless, priests sing, people exalt Him forever.

Let us bless the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Lord.

Beginningless Holy Trinity, God the Father and the Son and the Holy Soul, in the person of the saints count the soul of Your reposed servant and save the eternal fire, that He praises, singing forever: Fathers bless, priests sing, people exalt Him forever.

And now: Thee, Virgo, the prophecy of the face of the prophecy, the seer of Thee is the clairvoyant eye: oh, the staff called Thee, and the door of the east, but the mountain of the people is not insect. We confess Thee, truly, the Theotokos, who gave birth to the God of all, pray to Him to repose the reposed forever.

Canto 9

Irmos: The sky was terrified about this, and the ends of the earth were surprised, as if God appeared as a carnal man, and Your womb was the most spacious of heaven. Those are thee, the Mother of God, the Angels and the man of office are called.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of your departed servant.

Jesus, my God, Savior, Adamle, you took the crime and tasted death, but free the people from it, Mercy. The same we pray to Thee, the Merciful: the reposed rest, as if it were good, in the courts of Your saints, as the One is all-good and merciful.

Rest, O Lord, to the soul of your departed servant.

There is no one else, Mercy, who has not sinned against men, only You alone, Jesus Christ, take away the sins of the whole world. The same, having cleansed Your servant from sins, act in Your holy courts, for Thou art the belly and peace, and light, and joy of all who pleased You.

Glory: Surprised by all human nature, how the only-begotten Son of the Father without beginning, the flesh from the Virgin by the action of the Holy Spirit, you received, and you suffered like a man, but revive the dead. By that, and now reposed from us, we diligently pray to Thee, in the land of the living, like Good, settled.

And now: We call Thee the Bride, Most Pure, the Invisible Father, and the Mother of the Son, incarnated from Thee by the Holy Spirit, and we offer Thee a prayer house for the departed Thy servant, Name, we offer Thee the helper of the imam, the earth, and we magnify Thee with love singing.

The end of the funeral canons

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (thrice).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Lord, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your name's sake.

Lord have mercy (thrice).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth. Give us our daily bread today; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Troparion, tone 4

From the spirits of the righteous who have died, the soul of Your servant, Savior, rest in peace, keeping him in a blessed life, even with You, Humane.

In Thy rest, O Lord, where all Thy saints rest, rest also the soul of Thy servant, as Thou alone art lover.

Glory: You are the God who descended into hell and loosed the bonds of the fettered, Thyself and the soul of Thy servant rest.

And now: One pure and immaculate Virgin, who gave birth to God without a seed, pray that his soul be saved.

Lord have mercy (40 times).

Prayer

Remember, Lord our God, in faith and hope of the belly of your eternally deceased servant, name, and as a good and philanthropist, forgive sins and consume iniquity, weaken, leave and forgive all his voluntary and involuntary sins, exalting him to Your holy second coming into the communion of Your eternal blessings, even for the sake of the One faith in Thee, the true God and the Lover of mankind. Like you are the resurrection and the belly, and rest to your servant, name, Christ our God. And we send glory to You, with Your Father without beginning and with the Most Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever, amen.

The most honest Cherubim and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, without the corruption of God the Word gave birth to the real Mother of God, We magnify Thee (bow).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Lord, have mercy (three times).

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy and rest on the soul of Your servant, name , in endless ages, like a good man and a philanthropist, amen,

In blissful sleep, grant eternal rest, O Lord, to your departed servant [name] and make him an eternal memory.

Everlasting memory, (thrice).

Or we read the troparion three times with bows:
Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants, name(bow), and if in this life, as if people have sinned, You, as a God who loves people, forgive them and have mercy (bow) deliver eternal torment (bow), partakers of the Kingdom of Heaven (bow) and create useful things for our souls (bow).

Prayers for the departed are a continuation of our relationship with our neighbors. The Holy Church calls us, the living, to pray for the departed, for they no longer have the opportunity to pray for themselves. We must pray for the forgiveness of their sins and for the repose of their souls in the heavenly abodes, pray that God's good memory of them would be eternal...

The commemoration of the dead, first of all, is a daily prayer for them, which we include in the circle of our obligatory morning prayers:
Remember, Lord, from this life, His Holiness Patriarchs, His Grace Metropolitans, Archbishops and Bishops of the Orthodox, who have departed from this life, in the same priesthood and parable of the Church, and the monastic rank served You, and in Your eternal villages with the saints give rest. (Bow)
Remember, Lord, the souls of your departed servants, my parents (their names, if they died, if they are alive, these words should be omitted), and all relatives in the flesh and forgive them all sins, free and involuntary, granting them the Kingdom and eternal communion of Your good and Your endless and blissful life is pleasure. (Bow)
Remember, Lord, and all in the hope of the resurrection and eternal life of the reposed, fathers and our brothers and sisters, and lying here and everywhere, Orthodox Christians, and with Your saints, where the light of Your face dwells, indwell, and have mercy on us, as Good and Humanitarian. Amen. (Bow)
Grant, Lord, the forgiveness of sins to all those who have departed in the faith and hope of the resurrection, our fathers, brothers and sisters, and create for them an eternal memory. (Three times)
The dead should certainly be commemorated in church services.

Canon and prayer for the only deceased

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Read three times, with the sign of the cross and a bow from the waist)

Lord have mercy. (Three times)
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ, our King God. (Bow) Come, let us bow and bow down to Christ Himself, the King and our God. (Bow)

Psalm 90

Alive in the help of the Most High, in the blood of the God of heaven will be settled. The Lord says: Thou art my intercessor and my refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. Yako Toy will deliver thee from the net of the hunter, and from the word of the rebellious. His splash will overshadow you, and under His wings you hope that His truth will be your weapon. Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, from the arrow flying in the days, from the thing in the darkness of the transient, from the scum and the demon of the noonday. A thousand will fall from your country, and darkness at your right hand will not come near you. Both look at your eyes and see the retribution of sinners. As You, O Lord, are my hope; The Most High has made you your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not come near your body. As if by His Angel I commanded about you, keep you in all your ways. They will take you in their hands, but not when you stomp your foot on a stone. Step on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver; I will cover and, as if I knew my name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him, I am with him in sorrow, I will crush him and glorify him, I will fulfill him with long life and show him My salvation.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Lord have mercy. (Three times)

Troparion, tone 8

With the depth of wisdom, humanely build everything and give it useful to everyone, the One Creator, rest, Lord, the soul of Your servant, put hope in Thee, the Creator and Builder and our God.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.
Theotokos: You and the wall, and the refuge of the imam, and the prayer book are favorable to God, You gave birth to Him, O Brideless Mother of God, the faithful salvation.

Behold, in iniquities I was conceived, and in sins my mother gave birth to me. Behold, thou hast loved the truth, thou hast shown me thy unknown and secret wisdom.

Canon, voice 1

Canto 1

Irmos: Your victorious right hand glorified divinely in the fortress: that bo, Immortal, like an omnipotent opposing eraser, the Israelites have made a new path of depth.

The gates of death and faith, Thou hast broken the deathless with thy death, open the gates, Master, more than the mind of immortality to the departed, by the prayers of thy martyr.

Yes, let us be honored with the Divine belly, thou hast descended to death, the same has overthrown the treasures, thou hast taken us from there; now, Life-Giver, rest in peace.
Glory: You perceive my perishable and deadly, clothed you in incorruption, and lifted you up to endless life and blissfulness, even if you were generous, you accepted them, rest in peace.
And now: Who gave birth to the Word of God from God, let us faithfully sing: That is the All-Pure way of life for the dead, even as the God-receiver and the Mother of God, we will glorify.

Canto 3

Irmos: Only knowing the weakness of a human being, and mercifully not imagining it, gird me with strength from on high, to cry out to Thee, Holy One: animated temple of Thy inexpressible glory, Lover of mankind.
Chorus: Wonderful is God in His saints, the God of Israel.
Like the One is good, like the One is many-merciful, even piously departed to You, rest in heavenly villages, where there is indescribable joy and pleasure, and where the martyr's cathedral rejoices.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.
You alone appeared on earth, my Savior, sinless, Even the sins of the world take away as mercifully; from this world who have passed away by faith, rest your souls in the courts of your saints, in the sweetness of paradise, Lover of mankind.
Glory: Depose the power of death, the unending belly wasted by all the faithful, Lord; in this, teach those who have departed piously, despising immeasurable sins, and forgiving their sins, O Lover of mankind.
And now: She was conceived without a seed, the Pure, everlasting Word, who came to us in the flesh, and ruined the fortress of death, and the resurrection to the dead and eternal life with His mercy bestowing.

Sedalen, tone 6

Truly, all vanity, life is shadow and sleep, for every earthly being is tormented in vain, as the Scripture says: when we gain peace, then we will dwell in the tomb, where the king and the poor are together. The same, Christ God, reposed in peace, like a Lover of mankind.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.
Theotokion: All-holy Mother of God, do not leave me during my life, do not entrust me to human intercession, but intercede and have mercy on me.

They healed the mortal from hell, death is pleasant, and you have dulled the sting of death; but Thyself give rest, Thou didst receive them, Life-giver, martyr with prayers.
Chorus: Rest, O Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servants.
Mortification and corruption, free people, do the souls of the faithfully reposed in the courts of Your saints, from nowhere, sorrow will flee, and joy will be settled.
Glory: Paradise is with Thee hanged, as thou hast opened, now receive souls, Master, who have passed away to Thee by faith, give them the first-born to be settled in the Church.
And now: Delivering on Thee the hopes of those who have power, quietly guide to the haven of the Divine will, Thy motherly boldness to Thy Son, blessed All-blameless.

Even having created me, the most pure hand first, and bestowing the spirit, and descending to the earth evil, renewing the blush again, now the souls of those who have passed away, rest Himself.
