The spring equinox, or astronomical spring, in 2016 will come on March 20. On Sunday, the day will be equal in duration to the night: all over the globe, wherever we are, day and night will last 12 hours.

The sun at this moment crosses the celestial equator and moves from the southern hemisphere of the celestial sphere to the northern one. Astronomical spring is coming in the northern hemisphere of the Earth, and autumn is coming in the southern hemisphere.

What time is the spring equinox

The spring equinox will occur at 06.30 Moscow time (04.30 GMT) on March 20, 2016. And exactly six months later, namely September 23, the day of the autumnal equinox comes, which, accordingly, is called astronomical autumn.

In ancient times, when there were no calendars, it was believed that it was on the day of the vernal equinox that renewal in nature began: melting snow, swelling of buds on trees, the return of birds from the south, the first spring thunder.

Why doesn't the spring equinox have an exact date?

The interval between two equinoxes of the same name is called the tropical year, which is adopted for measuring time. Our usual daily calendar contains an equal number of days - 365 days. The tropical year is approximately 365.2422 solar days, so the equinox falls at different times of the day, moving forward each year by almost six hours.

For four years, the date of the equinox shifts by almost a day and, if it were not for the intercalary day leap year(February 29), the moment of the equinox would have continued to "float away" further along the calendar. To compensate for this shift, the concept of a leap year was introduced, which returns the equinox to the previous number.

Slavic vernal equinox

The day of the vernal equinox is not only a unique natural phenomenon and the beginning of astrological spring, but also a pagan Slavic holiday - Komoyeditsa.

Komoyeditsa appeared in the time of the Magi, and it was celebrated until the 16th century. At the same time, the holiday itself began a week before the day of the spring equinox and lasted a week after. It symbolized the complete victory of spring over winter. Yarilo-Sun came into its own: a new annual cycle began. Therefore, in ancient times, on the day of the vernal equinox, the Slavs, like many other peoples, had the beginning of a new year.

How the vernal equinox is celebrated in other countries

The day of the spring equinox is considered the beginning of the year (not calendar), for example, in Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran and Afghanistan. On March 21, Muslims will celebrate Navruz - a holiday of the beginning of spring and the arrival of a new year.

In modern Japan, the equinox is called "Spring Higan" and is a public holiday. According to tradition, the Japanese consider it right to visit the graves of deceased ancestors on this day, the altars are updated.

In Mexico, this holiday is celebrated by gathering at the pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. According to their beliefs, to meet spring at the top of the highest pyramid means to receive a blessing for the whole year. At the foot of the pyramids, Mexican actors perform ritual dances.

Who is Ostara?

The name Ostara is associated with the Germanic or Anglo-Germanic goddess Eostre (Istra), as we are informed by Beda the Venerable in the book “De Ratione Temporum” - he was the first to declare that the Christian Easter (Easter) was named after her. The goddess, known as Ostare, Ostara, Ostern, Eostra, Eostre, Eostur, Eastra, Eastur, Austro, Ausos, was the goddess of dawn and fertility among the northern European peoples. This is the greatest female deity of antiquity, fruitful of all nature.

The name "Ostara" has common roots with the names of Astrea, Astarte, Astghik (Armenia), Atargatis, Ishtar, Ashtoret, Greek Eos and Jewish Esther, which evokes associations with the morning dawn, the eastern direction, the beginning and " morning star"- the planet Venus. In addition, the peoples of the Mediterranean region celebrated the spring equinox with celebrations associated with the resurrection and / or return to the world of living male companions of mother goddesses: Attis, Adonis, Astara, Tammuz-Dumuzi, and so on, up to Christian Jesus. This symbolized the spring revival of nature, hitherto dead and bound by ice-death.

Rituals and Traditions for the Spring Equinox

One of the main rituals of the ancient Slavs on the day of the vernal equinox was the lighting of bonfires, symbolizing the main deity - Yarilo (the god of the Sun). But the fire was kindled not just like that, but with the help of glass.

In order to better recharge from solar fire, the Slavs jumped over fires, believing that in this way they burn all bad things, all diseases, receiving health, strength and new abilities from the Sun. A boy jumping over a fire was bound to grow up to be a real hero, and a girl - to become the mother of a hero and protector of the clan.

Like everything folk holidays, on the day of the vernal equinox, they tried to find out the weather for next year with the help of signs. So, if there was frost that day, they said that forty more frosts awaited everyone.

On this day, it was impossible to think about the bad: the ancients believed that this would definitely come true. One of the customs was to bake cookies in the shape of a bird that day. They were called larks.

rituals

It is believed that the day of the vernal equinox is the time for those who want to start a new life, correct past mistakes, rewrite something "from scratch". To do this, you need to clean your home or workplace.

The most important advice is to think and talk only about the good and pleasant on March 20. Evil thoughts, worries, swear words, quarrels and negativity will lead to the fact that everything that you talked about and thought about that day is realized. So esotericists recommend spending this day only with positive emotions.

DAY OF SPRING EQUINOX

concept "equinox" refers to March 20-21, when day and night are of equal length. The spring equinox marks the beginning (zero degree) of the sign Aries and spring season. The vernal equinox is especially important to Western astrologers, who use the Sun's position as the place where the zodiac begins.

ASTRONOMIC REFERENCE

By March 20-21, the Earth has overcome a quarter of its annual path in orbit. On the spring equinox, the sun illuminates exactly half of both hemispheres the globe, and throughout the planet, night and day last equally - 12 hours each. Then the Sun moves from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern, and the Earth continues its movement to reach a new equinox in another six months, on the opposite side of the orbit.

On the day of the vernal equinox, the sun throughout the Earth rises exactly in the east, and sets exactly in the west. When crossing this point of the celestial sphere astronomical spring in the northern hemisphere Earth. This is the spring equinox. Autumn is coming to the southern hemisphere. On this day, the length of day and night are the same throughout the Earth. On this day, throughout the Earth, day equals night. Of course, this is strictly mathematical. In fact, on the day of the spring (autumn) equinox, the day is still slightly longer than the night, thanks to atmospheric refraction, which “raises” the luminaries above the horizon. Astronomical spring begins in the northern hemisphere of the Earth on the day of the vernal equinox, and astronomical autumn sets in in the southern hemisphere.

The equinoxes are indicated by zodiac symbols corresponding to the constellations in which they were located during the time of Hipparchus of Nicaea (c. 190 BC - c. 120 BC): the spring equinox - the sign of Aries, the autumn equinox - the sign of Libra.

SPRING EQUINOX - BIOLOGICAL NEW YEAR

The fact of the equinoxes (spring and autumn) was known several centuries before the mapping of the starry sky and the drawing on it of the ecliptic (a large circle of the celestial sphere, along which the apparent annual movement of the Sun occurs).

Approximately three thousand years ago, on the territory of modern Italy, it was widespread calendar, which was based on agricultural, or rather, growing season, that is, the period of active life of the plant world. Since the labor activity of a significant part of the population was associated with the growing season, knowledge of the seasons, and, above all, the time of the beginning and end of agricultural work, was of considerable interest. Naturally, the growing season or agricultural year in different latitudes, and, consequently, climatic conditions different. In temperate climates, it lasts from the last spring frosts to the first autumn frosts, in subtropical latitudes the length of the growing season increases as it approaches the tropic, and in tropical latitudes it lasts almost the entire year. In that part of the Apennine Peninsula, where the ancient Roman calendar originated, a subtropical climate prevails, and there the vegetation calendar lasts about 300 days. When compiling the calendar, ancient Roman astronomers already knew that the length of days and nights varies and that there are two days in a year when the day is equal to the night.

Taking into account all these natural phenomena and the needs of life, the ancient Romans compiled a calendar, the growing year of which lasted 295 days and was divided into 10 months. The beginning of the year was taken as the month on which the day of the vernal equinox fell. And now there are countries, such as Iran, whose calendar year also begins on the day of the vernal equinox.

Since ancient times, the precession has been taken as a starting point sunrise point on the day of the spring equinox. This is evidenced by numerous astronomical markers of ancient civilizations that have survived to this day - near-horizon observatories, obelisks, pyramids. The main axis of Stonehenge, the gaze and body of the Great Sphinx at Giza are directed to this point. In the capital of the Mayan empire, the illusion is created that on the day of the spring and autumn equinoxes, the solar Serpent Quetzalcoatl slides down from the most famous pyramid. Ancient star charts and horoscopes, such as the Zodiac of Dendera or the Zodiac of Osiris, mounted on the ceiling of one of the chapels on the roof of the Temple of Hathor in Dendera, or the mysterious crop circles of the Mayan tribes, are based on coordinate systems with this starting point.

In ancient times, the days of the spring equinox were considered a great holiday. Nature is reborn, animals begin to lead a more active lifestyle, preparing for procreation: bears wake up, nightingales squander trills in the fight for a female, and moose arrange fights. For many peoples of the world, from the deepest antiquity, this the holiday became magical, ritual, one of the main holidays of the natural calendar cycle. It was believed that on this day, in the annual cycle, Spring, personifying the revival and rebirth of nature, replaces Winter.

At Slavs"larks" were baked as a symbol of the messengers of spring. Ancient Celts and Germans met migratory birds and prepared for the goddess of spring and dawn Ostara small wheat buns and colored eggs which were symbols of new life. On the day of the spring equinox begins New Year among many peoples and nationalities: Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan- Almost all countries of the Great Silk Road associate the beginning of the new year with this natural phenomenon. In this region important event is the oldest agricultural holiday Nowruz. According to an ancient custom, before the onset of Navruz, people must carefully clean their houses and around, fully pay off their debts. IN Japan celebrate Higan- the first spring holiday. Before the start of Higan, the Japanese carefully clean the house, especially the home altar with photographs and accessories of departed ancestors, freshen the flowers and put ritual foods on the altar. At the end of the days of spring Higan, the season of indescribably beautiful cherry blossoms immediately comes. Everyone can enjoy this picturesque picture, which symbolizes the triumph of spring and the renewal of nature.

Religion also did not bypass the day this time, filling the natural phenomenon with spiritual meaning. After the spring equinox, the biological principle wakes up in a person, he becomes more sensitive and emotional. For spiritual development during this period, world religions offer fasts and prayers, which are designed to find the source of the Divine in their inner world. 40 days before Easter, fasting begins, which should, by purification, prepare the soul of a person for acceptance Holy Fire which symbolizes the Holy Spirit. date Easter holiday, which is celebrated every year at different times, was counted from the day of the vernal equinox as follows: March 20-21 - the first new moon - the first Sunday, which was considered a holiday.

HELLO SUN!

Since time immemorial, people have singled out the Sun and the Moon among all other luminaries. Human life has always been connected with the Sun. In Rus', like other peoples, the veneration of the Sun was very alive. In the temples of the Slavs, holes and superstructures were made in the dome to observe the points of the rising of the Sun, in order to “catch” the moment when the day finally equaled the night in duration. This was considered a turning point in the struggle of the forces of light over the forces of darkness.

IN Ancient Rus' celebrated on the spring equinox Maslenitsa or Komoyeditsa. Saying goodbye to Winter, the Russians praised the god of the spring sun and fertility - Yarila. Yarilo belongs to the annually dying and resurrecting gods of fertility. Yarilo - the god of spring, embodies her fertile powers, he brings her with him. Yarilo spreads the spring solar warmth, excites the life-giving force in plants and people, brings youthful freshness, ardor of feelings into the life of nature and the life of people. Along with pancakes, personifying the sun, another symbol of Shrovetide is bear. On Shrovetide, a person was always dressed up in a bear coat or a sheepskin coat turned inside out. The peasants prepared special dishes and danced around the costumed ritual dance, imitating the movements of a waking bear.

Burned on Maslenitsa effigy Morena, Goddesses of Winter and Death. During the fiery actions, there was also a custom to roll ignited wheels, which also symbolized the burning Sun.

ZERO ARIES - POINT OF REPORT

Aries traditionally attributed such values as: beginning, momentum, breakthrough, independence, desire for leadership, egocentrism, openness, straightforwardness, cyclicity. Aries is a sign of strength, struggle, power, energy, and also sacrifice.

Beginning - 0 degrees of Aries - the first impulse of manifestation, he is the brightest and most active. This is the impulse that occurs in the seed when it begins to quickly gain energy for subsequent growth. Biologists know that if you throw a seed into water or place it in damp earth, where there is enough heat, then for a while it will gain energy. The total heat of the environment or the energy that the seed will gain crosses a critical line, and at this moment a strong electromagnetic impulse arises. On the graph, you can see a sharp jump that lasts only a few seconds. After that, the seed begins to actively gain momentum, and from that moment its growth begins.

Aries sign- the first sign of the Zodiac, and therefore its influence extends to spring, and to sunrise, and to any new undertaking. That is why they say that the sun exalted in Aries. The term "exaltation" means the place where the planet feels best, where it can function most harmoniously and unhindered. Scientists have made a discovery known as the Takata effect: the composition of our blood changes subtly at sunrise and sunset, as well as during solar eclipses. So, The fire sign Aries, ruled by Mars, is most directly related to the original fire on earth. The quality of this fire is cardinal, it is an active fire rushing upwards and vitality. Aries is one of those signs in which Mars is able to function in full accordance with its gambling nature. Archetypal Mars is the Mortal Hero, the King's Loyal Knight. problems (shadow in terms of K.G. Jung) can become anger, aggression, a destructive tendency. The archetype of the Courageous Knight turns into the Soldier - the invader.

Of course, this is the most general information. To understand the nuances of the character of an individual, it is necessary to analyze the birth chart. Sphere ( house of the horoscope) where Aries gets - this is the field for the implementation of activity, appropriate competition, healthy aggression, the energy potential of a person. In each of us, the primitive conqueror has been preserved, you just need to correctly understand the potential of Aries and adequately use it, and then you can say: "the gates themselves open before the brave ram."

And in conclusion, a few words about holidays that are celebrated on this day. March 20 is celebrated World Earth Day or Spring Equinox Day(Not to be confused with International Earth Day, celebrated on April 22). Since 1998 this day has been officially celebrated in Russia. Also, since the end of the twentieth century, March 20 has been considered an unofficial professional holiday of astrologers all over the world.
