Asr (prayer): description, time of performance and interesting facts

In Muslim tradition great importance attached to daily prayer, which must be performed at a certain time with strict adherence to the rules. Much is said about this in the writings that were left to believers by the prophets of antiquity. In the end, a fairly clear rule was drawn up, which is recommended for all true Muslim believers. And in this article we will talk about one daily prayer - asr prayer.

What is Asr Prayer?

Translated from Arabic, asr is the obligatory afternoon prayer. It is also called the time that falls on it. Asr prayer is the third such prayer in a row, which is performed in without fail during the day. And there are only five of them. All of them belong to the second pillar of Islam.

There is a certain rule for performing this prayer, which is recorded in the one hundred and third sura of the Qur'an. Also, references to it can be read in the ninth verse of Surah Al-Manafikun. The importance of this particular time is mentioned in the Qur'an in the surah Al-Asr of the same name.

Prayer time

We should be more specific about time. Asr prayer should be performed at exactly the hours allotted for it. The time of its beginning is somewhat different for different currents of Islam, but not radically.

In general, most are of the opinion that the third prayer can be started already when the shadows on the street become twice as long as the object itself. Other schools believe that you can start a little earlier - when the shadows become equal to the object.

The time when the afternoon prayer can no longer be performed begins immediately after sunset, as the time comes for another prayer - Maghrib (sunset). Many believers perform asr before the sun begins to turn reddish, setting below the horizon, thus observing the precepts of the Messenger of Allah.

That is why everyone agrees that best time performance of a prayer - immediately at the beginning of the time period allotted for prayer. This suggests that the believer really broke away from his worldly affairs and turned to Allah. At the very end of the allotted time, it is allowed to read a prayer only if there was a good reason not to fulfill it earlier.

The rakahs that make up the prayer

Now let's take a closer look at the asr prayer, how many rak'ahs are performed during its execution. Rakat is a complete cycle of all readings of a prayer and the movements made at the same time. It can be repeated one or more times (depending on the type of prayer).

It includes the pronunciation of the takbir, then the reading of “Al-Fatih”, bowing and straightening, bowing to the ground and straightening (the posture remains kneeling), bowing to the earth again and returning to its original position. Of course, this is only a general guideline, because depending on which rak'ah it is, the process may differ, and it also has differences (albeit minor ones) depending on the prayer itself.

In the afternoon Asr prayer there are four rak'ahs. They are read in a whisper, but in such a way that you can hear it in silence. Those. you can’t just move your lips, you need to pronounce all the words with such a sound as if you are whispering in someone’s ear. There are the same number of rak'ahs in the Zuhr and Isha prayers, but in the Maghrib prayer there are three rak'ahs, in Fajr - only two. They are read differently.

How prayer is performed: actions

Let us consider in more detail how to read Asr prayer correctly, and what actions are performed. As mentioned above, the words in the afternoon prayer must be pronounced in a quiet whisper, pronouncing all the words not only with the heart, but also with the voice.

Actions, in principle, are very similar to the traditional performance of rak'ahs. At the beginning, you should make a niyat (intention), clearly fixing aloud what you are going to do. Next, you need to raise your hands with your palms towards the Qibla and raise them to the level of your ears. Say takbir.

Then clasp your hands and lower them to the navel, read du'a Sana, surah Al-Fatiha and any other of your choice. Lower your arms and make a waist bow. Then, pronouncing certain words, you need to bow to the ground, touch the place of the saj low.

At the end, say “Allahu Akbar”, return to a sitting position, after two or three seconds, repeat the bow again. The first rak'ah is over. Start the second one by standing up. Perform all rak'ahs by reciting the appropriate words and performing the required actions. After the fourth rakah, prayer can be considered finished.

Differences in actions for men and women

Asr prayer for women is somewhat different only in the performance of actions. For example, while turning the palms towards the Qibla, women should raise their hands to chest level, not higher. Whereas men raise them to the very ears, touching the lobes with their thumbs.

Also, women do not lower their hands to the navel while reading the du'a Sana, but keep them at chest level. During a waist bow, they should not fully straighten their legs and back, fingers should be brought together.

During the prostration, men and women sit in the same way (the feet are parallel to each other, and the fingers are directed towards the Qibla), but the elbows are pressed to the sides of the women. While getting up from the prostration, women sit on their left thigh, picking up their legs and pointing their toes towards the Qibla.

It should also be noted that women do not perform prayer if they have menstruation at this moment. According to all the rules, it should be started only when the cleansing has taken place.

What do the sacred texts say about the importance of this prayer

Namaz al asr in all sacred texts is considered the most important to perform. This comes from the fact that during its implementation, many Muslims should break away from their worldly affairs in order to perform prayer. This is precisely its advantage - the opposition of worldly pleasures, of which there are so many around, and turning to Allah.

So a Muslim can resist sin, the influence of Shaitan and follow the commandments of Allah, observing his spiritual duties. There is no such relation to any prayer as to the afternoon, therefore it is recommended to plan your day in such a way that it fits harmoniously into it.

Other prayers

Other daily prayers in Islam should also be noted. There are only five of them, and they are mandatory.

  1. Farge. This is the morning prayer, which is performed before sunrise. If a Muslim managed to perform at least one rak'ah of prayer, then he managed to do it on time. If not, then she goes to debt prayers.
  2. Zuhr. This is the second prayer in a row, which is called midday. It is performed after the passage of the sun through the zenith, but before the shadows of objects become larger than themselves. Therefore, the prayer can begin to be performed after the sun has overcome the highest point in the sky.
  3. Asr. Afternoon prayer, which this article was about.
  4. Maghreb. This prayer after Asr is performed as soon as the daylight sets over the horizon. And you need to complete it before the evening dawn disappears. This prayer has the shortest time to perform, so you need to be very careful not to miss it. The preference for execution is given to the first minutes, as the resolution comes.
  5. Isha. This prayer can be performed immediately after the evening glow has disappeared. The time interval when it can be done is the largest, since the end of the prayer period is the first signs of the morning dawn. However, it is still recommended to perform it until the first half or even a third of the night has elapsed.

Conclusion

Thus, based on all of the above, asr prayer is one of the five most important daily prayers, when a Muslim can directly turn to Allah, remember that he is just a mortal person. And also about the impossibility of taking worldly goods on the other side of earthly life, no matter how much you want to. Therefore, we should begin to take care of our other life right now, discarding at least for a while all worldly habits, worries, pleasures, etc.

Several semantic translations are possible: “I swear by the time interval that begins after the sun has shifted from its zenith and continues until sunset”; "I swear by the afternoon prayer."

That is, the slanderers plunged into "al-khutoma" will lose all hope of liberation, the gates of Hell will be tightly closed before them.

The Qur'anic sura tells about historical event, which happened in the year of the birth of the last messenger of the Lord Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and became a sign for people who understand.

By this time restored by the prophet Abraham ancient temple Monotheistic Kaaba (see: Holy Quran, 22:26, 29) was again turned by the Arabs into main temple his pagan pantheon. Mecca became the center of paganism, attracting pilgrims from all over Arab East. This caused discontent of the rulers of neighboring states. Then the ruler of Yemen Abraha, in order to attract pilgrims, built a new temple, striking in its luxury and beauty. But place of worship could not become a center of pilgrimage for nomads, who still recognized only Mecca as such.

Once, a certain Bedouin-pagan, demonstrating his disrespect for the Yemeni temple, desecrated it. Upon learning of this, Abraha vowed to wipe the Kaaba off the face of the earth.

In the army equipped by him there were eight (according to other sources - twelve) elephants, which were supposed to destroy the Kaaba.

Approaching Mecca, the army of Abraha set up a camp for rest. Camels grazing in the vicinity immediately became the prey of the Yemenis. Among them were two hundred camels belonging to one of the most respected people of Mecca, ‘Abdul-Muttalib (the grandfather of the future Prophet).

In the meantime, Abraha ordered that the most respected Meccan be brought to him. The inhabitants pointed to ‘Abdul-Muttalib, who went to negotiate with Abraha. The dignity and nobility of ‘Abdul-Muttalib immediately inspired the ruler of Yemen with respect for him, and he invited the Meccan to sit next to him. "Do you have any request for me?" Abraha asked. “Yes,” said ‘Abdul-Muttalib. “I want to ask you to return my camels, which were taken away by your soldiers.” Abraha was surprised: “Seeing your noble face and courage, I sat down next to you. But when I heard you, I realized that you are a cowardly and selfish person. While I came with the intention of razing your shrine from the face of the earth, are you asking for some camels?!” “But I am only the owner of my camels, and the Lord Himself is the owner of the temple, He will save it ...” was the answer. Taking his herd, ‘Abdul-Muttalib returned to the city, abandoned by the inhabitants, who were unable to resist the huge army. Together with the people accompanying him, ‘Abdul-Muttalib prayed for a long time at the threshold of the Kaaba, offering a prayer for the salvation and preservation of the Lord’s temple, after which they left Mecca.

When Abraha's troops tried to storm the city, a miraculous sign happened: a flock of birds appeared and threw stones from burnt clay at the army. Abraha's army was destroyed. Defenseless Mecca and Kaaba were saved, for according to the plan of the Lord, a different fate was destined for them.

This story is a clear sign for those who have reason.

See, for example: Ibn Kasir I. Tafsir al-kur'an al-'azim. T. 4. S. 584, 585.

The Lord is Almighty: He manifests His punishment through seemingly weak and defenseless creatures. So, for the refusal of the pharaoh to release Moses and his people for worship, one of the "executions of Egypt" was the invasion of toads, midges, "dog flies", locusts that flooded all of Egypt. The "plagues of Egypt," according to the Bible, forced the pharaoh to release the people of Israel from captivity (Ex. 8:10).

1. Ya. Syn.
2. I swear by the wise Quran!
3. Verily, you are one of the Messengers
4. on a straight path.
5. He was sent down by the Mighty, the Merciful,
6. that you warn people whose fathers no one warned, because of which they remained careless ignoramuses.
7. The Word has come true concerning most of them, and they will not believe.
8. Verily, We have put fetters on their necks up to the chin, and their heads are lifted up.
9. We set up a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and covered them with a veil, and they did not see.
10. They don't care if you warn them or not. They don't believe.
11. You can only warn those who followed the Reminder and were afraid of the Merciful, not seeing Him with their own eyes. Rejoice him with the news of forgiveness and a generous reward.
12. Verily, We revive the dead and record what they did and what they left behind. Every thing We have counted in a clear guide (of the Preserved Tablet).
13. As a parable, bring to them the inhabitants of the village, to whom the messengers came.
14. When We sent two messengers to them, they considered them liars, and then We reinforced them with a third. They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to you."
15. They said: “You are the same people as we are. The Merciful One did not send down anything, and you are only lying.”
16. They said: “Our Lord knows that we have indeed been sent to you.
17. Only the clear transmission of revelation is entrusted to us.”
18. They said: “Indeed, we have seen in you an evil omen. If you do not stop, then we will certainly beat you with stones and you will be touched by painful sufferings from us.
19. They said: “Your evil omen will turn against you. Do you consider it a bad omen if you are warned? Oh no! You are people who have crossed the boundaries of what is permitted!”
20. From the outskirts of the city a man came in a hurry and said: “O my people! Follow the messengers.
21. Follow those who do not ask you for a reward and follow the straight path.
22. And why should I not worship the One who created me and to whom you will be returned?
23. Shall I worship other gods besides Him? For if the Merciful wishes to harm me, their intercession will not help me in any way, and they will not save me.
24. Then I will be in obvious error.
25. Verily, I have believed in your Lord. Listen to me."
26. He was told: “Enter Paradise!” He said, "Oh, if only my people knew
27. why my Lord forgave me (or that my Lord forgave me) and that He made me one of the honored!”
28. After him, We did not send down any army from heaven against his people, and We did not intend to send down.
29. There was only one voice, and they died out.
30. Woe to the slaves! Not a single messenger came to them that they did not mock.
31. Do they not see how many generations We destroyed before them, and that they will not return to them?
32. Verily, all of them will be gathered from Us.
33. A sign for them is the dead earth, which We revived and extracted from it the grain on which they feed.
34. We made gardens of palms and vines on it and made springs flow in them,
35. that they eat their fruits and what they have created with their own hands (or that they eat fruits that they have not created with their own hands). Won't they be grateful?
36. Exalted is He Who created in pairs what the earth grows, themselves and what they do not know.
37. A sign for them is the night, which We separate from the day, and now they are plunged into darkness.
38. The sun sails to its place. Such is the arrangement of the Mighty, the Knower.
39. We have ordained positions for the moon until it again becomes like an old palm branch.
40. The sun does not have to overtake the moon, and the night is not ahead of the day. Each floats in orbit.
41. A sign for them is that We carried their offspring in an overflowing ark.
42. We created for them in his likeness what they sit on.
43. If We will, We will drown them, and then no one will save them, and they themselves will not be saved,
44. unless We show them mercy and allow them to enjoy benefits until a certain time.
45. When they are told: “Fear what is before you and what is after you, so that you may have mercy,” they do not answer.
46. Whatever sign of the signs of their Lord comes to them, they will surely turn away from it.
47. When they are told: “Spend from what Allah has given you,” the disbelievers say to the believers: “Shall we feed the one whom Allah would feed if He wished? Verily, you are only in apparent error.”
48. They say: “When will this promise come true if you are telling the truth?”
49. They have nothing to look forward to, except for one voice that will strike them when they quarrel.
50. They will not be able to leave a will or return to their families.
51. The horn will be blown, and now they rush to their Lord from the graves.
52. They will say: “Woe to us! Who raised us from the place where we slept? This is what the Merciful promised, and the messengers spoke the truth.”
53. There will be only one voice, and they will all be gathered from Us.
54. Today, no injustice will be done to a single soul, and you will be rewarded only for what you did.
55. Verily, the inhabitants of Paradise today will be occupied with pleasure.
56. They and their spouses will lie in the shadows on the beds, leaning against.
57. There is fruit for them and everything they need.
58. The merciful Lord greets them with the word: “Peace!”
59. Separate yourself today, O sinners!
60. Haven't I commanded you, O sons of Adam, not to worship Satan, who is your open enemy,
61. And worship Me? This is the straight path.
62. He has already deceived many of you. Don't you understand?
63. Here is Gehenna, which was promised to you.
64. Burn in it today because you did not believe.
65. Today We will seal their mouths. Their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify to what they have acquired.
66. If We will, We will deprive them of their sight, and then they will rush to the Path. But how will they see?
67. If We will, We will disfigure them in their places, and then they can neither move forward nor return.
68. To whom We grant long life, We give the opposite form. Don't they understand?
69. We did not teach him (Muhammad) poetry, and it is not befitting for him. This is nothing but a Reminder and a clear Quran,
70. that he should warn those who are alive, and that the Word might be fulfilled concerning unbelievers.
71. Do they not see that out of what Our hands (We Ourselves) have made, We have created cattle for them, and that they own them?
72. We made him subject to them. They ride on some of them, and feed on others.
73. They bring them benefit and drink. Won't they be grateful?
74. But they worship other gods instead of Allah in the hope that they will be helped.
75. They cannot help them, although they are a ready army for them (the pagans are ready to fight for their idols, or the idols will be in Last life ready army against the pagans).

In the Holy Qur'an there is a small and concise, but very informative sura, about which Imam Ash-Shafi'i (may Allah grant him His mercy) said: “If Allah had revealed only this surah as an argument, then this would have been enough”. This surah would be sufficient, since Allah Almighty explained in it the causes of happiness and unhappiness. This important and meaningful sura is the sura "Evening Time".

Allah Almighty said:

“I swear by evening time (or time)! Indeed, every person is at a loss, except for those who believe, do righteous deeds, command each other the truth and command each other patience! .

Benefits deriving from Surah "Evening Time":

The study of these matters is obligatory, contrary to the opinion of those who think that the study of these things is merely desirable or permissible. At the same time, the obligation to study these issues applies to each Muslim individually, because the acquisition of knowledge is of two types:

{فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ} [محمد: 19]

"Know that there is no god, worthy of worship except Allah(Sura "Muhammad", 19).

Words and deeds must be preceded by knowledge, since actions will be useful only when they are based on knowledge. Actions based on ignorance will not benefit a person, but will cause error and trouble on the Day of Judgment.

The knowledge of Allah Almighty means the knowledge of the Lord with the heart, which implies the acceptance of His instructions, obedience and following Him, the recognition of His Law (Sharia) as a constitution and a source for decision-making.

How does a person know his Lord? A person comes to know His Creator by reading and meditating on His Revelation (namely, the verses of the Holy Quran and the pure Sunnah of His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)). Reading the verses of the Holy Quran, a person learns that it is Allah Almighty - the Creator of heaven and earth, Who gives life and death, and that He is capable of any thing, that He is Merciful and Merciful, that Almighty Allah created us, gave us food. Thus, thanks to the reading of the Holy Quran, we learn about our Lord, about His beautiful names and exalted attributes.

In addition, man comes to know his Creator by observing His signs in His creations. Each time, observing and reflecting on the creations and signs of the Almighty, a person learns more and more about his Creator. The Holy Quran says about it:

{وَفِي الْأَرْضِ آيَاتٌ لِلْمُوقِنِينَ . وَفِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ} [الذاريات: 20، 21]

“There are signs on earth for people who are convinced, and also in yourselves. Don't you see?"(Surah "Scattering Dust", 20, 21).

The second is the knowledge of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), which is also necessary and obligatory, because he is the transmitter of God's Message, the link between us and our Lord. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is the one who brought the Law of the Almighty to us.

It is necessary to know about him so that we can imitate him and follow his path (Sunnah). The knowledge of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) includes the acceptance of his direct path and the true religion with which he was sent to us. We must believe what he told us, obey his commands, follow his prohibitions, agree with his decision and be pleased with him. This is stated in many verses of the Holy Quran:

(فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لُ َ بَيْنَهُمْ لَا يَجِدُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ حَرَجًا مِمَّا قَ ضَيْتَ وَيُسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا) [النساء: 65]

“But no, I swear by your Lord! - they will not believe until they choose you as a judge in everything that causes disputes between them, until they cease to feel embarrassment in their souls from your decision and until they completely obey ”(Sura“ Women , 65).

“When the believers are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge them, they say: “We listen and obey!” It is they who are successful” (Sura “Light”, 51).

“Let those who oppose his will beware, lest temptation overtake them or agonizing suffering overtake them” (Sura “Light”, 63).

Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said about the last verse: “Do you know what temptation is? Temptation is shirk (polytheism), if someone rejects some of the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then his heart will be deviated and he will be lost..

The third is the knowledge of religion, which includes the explanation of Islam in its broad and narrow senses. In a broad sense, Islam means obedience and worship to the Almighty in accordance with what he established for his slaves through his Messengers until the Day of Judgment. Many verses of the Holy Quran mention that all the Prophets called for this religion - the religion of Allah, Islam. The Quran says:

“Say: “We believe in Allah, and also in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Ibrahim (to Abraham) Ismail (to Ishmael), Ishaq (to Isaac) Yakubu (to Jacob) and knees (to the twelve sons of Yaqub), what was given to Musa (to Moses) and Ise (to Jesus) and what was given to the prophets by their Lord. We make no distinction between them, and to Him alone we submit.”(Sura "Cow", 136).

In the narrow sense, the word "Islam" after prophetic mission Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) means that with which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent to all people, because he was sent with a new Law from the Almighty, thereby canceling the previous Sharia. Therefore, whoever follows the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he becomes a Muslim, a submissive slave of the Almighty, and whoever refuses, he cannot be considered a Muslim.

“If they (People of the Book) believe what you believed, they will follow the straight path. If they turn away, they will be in discord with truth» (Sura "Cow", 137).

Thus, the followers of Musa (Prophet Moses) (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were Muslims (obedient slaves of the Almighty) during the messenger mission of Musa and after it until the next Prophet came. Also, the followers of Isa (Jesus) (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were Muslims. Now, after the arrival of the last Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), about whom the previous communities were well aware and were warned about his coming, a Muslim is only one who followed Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) - the seal of the Prophets, the last Messenger Allah. Thus, he becomes an adherent of the religion of Islam in the narrow sense. At the same time, as it was said, in a broad sense, all the Prophets and Messengers before him were also Muslims, adherents of the religion of the Almighty - Islam (the religion of obedience to their One Creator and Lord).

Thus, the only correct religion, which is accepted by the Almighty, is the religion of Islam. Only this religion, with which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent, will benefit his follower. Many verses in the Holy Quran point to this.

"Verily, the true religion of Allah is Islam"(Sura “The Family of Imran”, 19).

“From one who seeks a religion other than Islam, this will never be accepted, and in the Hereafter he will be among those who suffered loss” (Sura “Imran’s Family”, 85).

“Today, for your sake, I have perfected your religion, completed My mercy on you and approved Islam as a religion for you” (Sura “Meal”, 3).

The knowledge of the Lord, His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and His religion should be based on arguments and evidence and should not be in the nature of blindly following anyone or traditions passed down from generation to generation without relying on arguments. Thus, we need the knowledge of the Holy Quran and the Most Pure Sunnah, and in this we are helped by scientists, the righteous predecessors of our Ummah (community), who explain and comment on verses and hadiths for us. At the same time, they, in turn, also rely on verses and hadiths.

2. Second quality- This deeds in accordance with this knowledge, obeying the commands of the Almighty and following His prohibitions. Just having knowledge is not enough. It is not enough just to learn or teach, it is necessary in turn to implement this knowledge in life. In fact, actions are the fruits of knowledge. After all, knowledge without deeds will be an argument against a person.

Also, deeds done without knowledge are misfortune and error. Pay attention to the fact that we read the Al-Fatiha surah in every rak'ah in prayer, at the end of which we make a dua, we pray to the Almighty:

The عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ) [ال فاتحة: 6، 7]

“Guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom You have favored, not the path of those on whom anger fell, and not the path of the lost” (Sura “Opening”, 6, 7).

Thus, we ask the Almighty when reading these verses that He does not lead us along the path of those on whom His wrath fell. These are those who had knowledge, but did not act in accordance with them. Did something, knowing that it was impossible to do it, or refused something, knowing that it was prescribed for him. We also ask Allah not to lead us along the path of those who did deeds without knowledge, calling them astray.

3. Third quality- This call to the religion of Allah. Knowing and acting in accordance with knowledge is not enough, it is also necessary to call for it in order to benefit others. Knowledge is not the property of individuals, cannot be monopolized, and should not deprive others of the benefits of knowledge. It is necessary to disseminate the acquired knowledge, explain and bring it to the rest.

In addition, it must be understood that the call is the destination God's Prophets and Messengers and through their followers. Therefore, if a Muslim knows his Lord, His Prophet and His religion, then he must certainly convey this to the people around him, please them with happy news.

4 . The fourth quality- This patience on the path to recruitment. Unfortunately, not everyone wants the best. Many want to satisfy only their passions, pursue selfish goals, resorting to forbidden things. As you spread the truth, you are sure to encounter those who will oppose you and your call in word and deed. Such is the reaction of the ignorant wicked towards those who call them to good and good. This is the test of the Almighty.

“Before you, the Messengers were also considered liars, but they endured what they were called and offended until Our help came to them” (Sura “Cattle”, 34).
